The night and the forest, these are the places where the early Romantics felt at home. The same was true of Franz Schubert, who we know enjoyed leaving Vienna to come to himself in nature. His songs and choral works are therefore teeming with rustling leaves, babbling brooks, singing nightingales and darting fish. But Schubert’s music does more than simply paint nature. As befits a true romantic, his music is chiefly about the emotions that nature evokes in the individual. Ex Tempore (cond. Florian Heyerick) performs several of his most sombre works for male choir.

Every year, The European Music Festival for Young People takes place in the town of Neerpelt (Belgium). This annual festival brings alternating choral and instrumental festival editions. Youngsters from in and around Europe come to Neerpelt to make music and fraternise.
For this year’s edition, I was commissioned by the festival to compose one of the compulsory works for the competition portion of the festival. All the different choirs participating in the C category will sing my new piece, Slangen door de Stilte, set on text by Paul Van Ostaijen.

Over the last two decades, ANÚNA have developed a specific methodology that has evolved from the unique nature of our performance practices and history. These techniques have a universal relevance that can be applied equally to amateur, youth and professional ensembles and solo singers. Our ideas address the fundamental nature of singing itself in a radical new way that is simple, clear and familiar.
During our Dutch tour, a few of the ANÚNA members, including myself, will be giving a workshop on our approach to ensemble singing, focusing on breathing, the natural voice, and the interconnectedness of a vocal ensemble.
This workshop will be given in English and Dutch. The deadline to sign up is 7 December 2022.
Further details at homeoftalents.nl.
Touring with ANÚNA throughout the Netherlands, from December 7th to the 23rd.
